On this episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote and the crew set off to catch a MONSTER Sockeye in the wilds of Alaska!
In quite possibly their grandest adventure to date, prepare to witness the Brave Wilderness team face icy rains, blustering wind and freezing cold water all in an attempt to get the cameras up close to Alaska’s most iconic fish, the Sockeye Salmon!
Oh and did we mention Coyote will attempt to catch one using nothing more than a common fishing net?! That’s right, this adventures success all hinges on Coyote’s ability to pull off a nearly impossible fish capture…will he be up to the task?

As someone who’s always lived in Alaska, I remember going in field trips to see salmon spawning and it was always planned for when it was raining since that was usually when they were most active. It’s also weird as a child to be selected to help forcefully help the salmon breed

Remember, it's basically impossible to fish for salmon with a fishing pole. Salmon in salmon runs don't feed, so the only way is to use fishing nets.

And before you say Jeremy Wade caught a salmon with a fishing pole, yes it is possible, but he depended on the hook to hook onto the salmon's mouth and it was all in the casting location, so as I said, BASICALLY impossible, not 100%.

Sockeye are beautiful animals. They live so gracefully and die where they are born. They die in a way that is peaceful and benefits the ecosystem. I will never forget rewatching this video and I am ridiculously thankful for this realization.

That Sockeye looks amazing, definitely bigger than here in Bellingham, our salmons size has decreased so much, with the average in the early 1980-2008’s being 20 or more pounds, but now they are like 10 pounds, they are still very good but they don’t have as much meat to harvest

Very depressing and melancholic video. The only thing that threw me off from feeling sorrowful to plain annoyed was what you said about their "strong instincts". That's just like saying "their strong natural intelligence" which makes no sense because intelligence can't be strong. Formidable? Absolutely. Breathtaking? Definitely. Strong? No. Instinct isn't an urge or a drive, instinct is intelligence that they use to navigate through their life. Nothing is keeping them there except their own decisions. Still, great video

As a person who WAS born in Alaska, and a bear advocate, I too thought that bear mace would work if deployed correctly. Let me be completely CLEAR, BEAR MACE IS A SLIGHT DETERRENT SPRAYED FROM ABOUT 6 feet away, even the strongest types of spray will NOT be a serious deterrent to a motivated BEAR. Everyone in Alaska who spends time in the bush carries a large caliber revolver or a 12gauge with a 3 inch slug. I particularly fond of the Dessert Eagle 50 caliber or even the Dessert Eagle in 44 magnums. It's a tool that you must have, unless you have a couple of armed guides. For me I like to know that I HAVE A MEANS OF SAVING MY OWN LIFE. I'M SORRY BUT, I PREDICT THAT EITHER NAT GEO, DISCOVERY, OR ONE OF THE MANY, MANY DIFFERENT DOCUMENTARY FILM CREW, CREW'S WILL BE DEVASTATINGLY ATTACKED AND MAULED OR EVEN WORSE KILLED! Look I get it animals are your lives WORK, and killing one is the last thing you want to DO! If you want to go home to the wife and kids YOU WILL!
